Description:

The Center for Sensing to Intelligence (S2I) at Caltech is pleased to announce a call for proposals seeking seed funding for early-stage research projects. This call will prioritize proposals that address significant challenges and opportunities associated with human health, climate change, and intelligent systems for scientific discoveries via new sensing/imaging technologies, and/or new computational and mathematical approaches for extracting actionable information from large or noisy datasets. S2I is very interested in receiving collaborative proposals seeking support for activities that take a holistic co-design approach between adaptive sensing, information recovery, prediction and action.

Frequency: First-time opportunity

Total Award: $80,000

  • Up to $80,000 over a period of 18 months.
    • Tuition rate is 66%.
    • No PI salary is allowed.

Indirect Costs: Not Allowed

  • A signed DAF is required.

Duration: 18 months

Discipline(s): Biology and Biological Engineering; Chemistry and Chemical Engineering; Engineering and Applied Science; Geological and Planetary Sciences; Physics, Mathematics, and Astronomy

Eligibility: Tenure-Track Faculty, Tenured Faculty

  • Only one submission is allowed per lead PI.

Research Areas of Interest:

  • This call will prioritize proposals that address significant challenges and opportunities associated with human health, climate change, and intelligent systems for scientific discoveries via new sensing/imaging technologies, and/or new computational and mathematical approaches for extracting actionable information from large or noisy datasets.
  • Proposals may seek support for fundamentally new or existing research projects that are taking a new direction.
  • The following factors will be considered in the selection process:
    • The overall intellectual strength of the proposal and its alignment with the S2I's general mission.
    • Whether the project is a cross-disciplinary collaboration.
    • The qualifications of the investigator(s).

Post-Award Obligations:

TBD

Recent Caltech Recipients:

  • None, New Opportunity

Proposals should include:

  1. A cover page: proposal title, PI(s) name(s) and project summary (50 words max);
  2. Technical narrative (2 pages max in a readable font, inclusive of figures);
  3. Project budget (up to $80K over a period of 18 months; tuition rate 66%; no overhead; no PI salary);
  4. Current funding related to the proposed project; and
