FUNDING MEMO

Title: LCRF Pilot Grant Program - LOI

Funding Agency: Lung Cancer Research Foundation

External Deadline(s):

04/30/2022 08:59 PM PDT (LOI)
08/29/2022 08:59 PM PDT (Full Proposal)

Cognizant Office: Office of Sponsored Research/Office of Foundation Relations

Description:

Lung cancer continues to be the number one cause of cancer deaths worldwide, accounting for an estimated 136,000 deaths annually in the United States alone. Despite being the most common cancer killer of both men and women, lung cancer research remains critically underfunded. To help close this gap and improve outcomes, the goal of the Lung Cancer Research Foundation (LCRF) pilot grant program is to fund innovative projects across the full spectrum of basic, translational, clinical, epidemiological, health services, and other research.

Frequency: Typically annual

Total Award: $150,000

  • The maximum award amount is $150,000 for a period of two years (disbursed at $75,000 per year).
    • The LCRF grant must be the primary source of support for the project.
      • Additional secondary funding (e.g. for core services support) is permitted.
    • There is no limit on the amount of salary support that may be requested. For laboratory-based projects, any salary requests in excess of 20% of the total budget must be explicitly justified.
    • Any equipment costs must be limited and directly applicable to the research project (i.e., large, general equipment costs are not permitted).
    • Direct patient care costs reimbursable by other sources may not be included.
    • Travel and publication costs are permitted.

Indirect Costs: Not Allowed

  • Caltech’s minimum overhead rate is based on the award’s annual gross funding. Please refer to the FY22 Annual Rate Memo for applicable minimum overhead requirements. Applicants must work within their division to account for the required overhead via an approved MORA form.

Duration: 2 years

Discipline(s): Biology and Biological Engineering; Chemistry and Chemical Engineering; Engineering and Applied Science

Eligibility: Postdoc, Research Faculty, Tenure-Track Faculty, Tenured Faculty

  • Investigators must be affiliated with a non-profit academic or research institution and must be post-doctoral researchers, clinical fellows, or early-career and mid-career investigators with less than 10 years' experience since their initial faculty appointment.
    • Caltech researchers other than tenure-track faculty will need to obtain approval from the Division Chair and Vice Provost for Research prior to submitting an application.
    • Note: Exceptions will be made for investigators with more than ten years' experience in other disease areas or topics.

Research Areas of Interest:

  • Acceptable projects include, but are not limited to:
    • Lung cancer biology;
    • Prevention and screening for early detection;
    • Identification of new biomarkers;
    • Development of more effective and less toxic therapies including but not limited to targeted and immune-therapies;
    • Genetic and gene-environment interactions;
    • Interactions and contributions of multiple factors (e.g. smoking, genetics, environment, societal factors) to disparities in lung cancer outcomes;
    • Mechanisms of sensitivity and resistance to lung cancer therapies;
    • Bioengineering approaches to understanding and/or treating lung cancer (i.e., theranostics, biomaterials, nanotechnology, controlled-drug release, and gene-therapy);
    • Supportive measures for people with lung cancer and their families.

Post-Award Obligations:

  • During the funding period, all investigators are required to submit at least two progress reports.

Recent Caltech Recipients:

  • None
