Description:

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund Postdoctoral Diversity Enrichment Program (PDEP) supports career development activities for underrepresented minority postdoctoral fellows in a degree-granting institution in the United States or Canada whose training and professional development are guided by mentors committed to helping them advance to stellar careers in biomedical or medical research. This grant is meant to supplement the training of postdocs whose research activities are already supported. It is not a research grant.

Frequency: Typically annual

Total Award: $60,000

  • $20,000 per year over 3 ($60,000 total).
    • Years one and two: $10,000 for research supplies and equipment and $10,000 for education and training each year.
    • Year three: $20,000 to help the postdoctoral fellow advance research efforts towards the professoriate (funds must be used to develop independent, innovative areas of research).
    • Funds are not to support salary expenses.

Indirect Costs: Not Allowed

  • Caltech’s minimum overhead rate is based on the award’s annual gross funding. Please refer to the FY23 Annual Rate Memo for applicable minimum overhead requirements. Applicants must work within their division to account for the required overhead via an approved MORA form.

Duration: 3 years

  • Grant period is September 1, 2023 through August 31, 2026.

Eligibility: Postdoc

  • Interested applicants must first complete an eligibility quiz prior to applying (quiz is available through the “Begin a Proposal” link on the BWF website).
  • Applicants must have no more than 48 months of postdoctoral research experience (in a research laboratory) at the time of application and not be more than 5 years from their PhD.
  • Applicants must be nominated by a qualified mentor at the degree-granting institution where the applicant will conduct the postdoctoral/fellowship training. Mentors may be requested to attend mentoring workshops.
  • Applicants must have secured a postdoctoral position with funding (including support by the mentor’s existing research grants) and must begin the position on or by the designated award commencement date.
  • Applicants must be underrepresented minorities (i.e., American Indian or Alaska Native, Black or African American, Hispanic, or Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander) conducting biomedical or medical research.
  • Applicants must be citizens of the United States or Canada at the time of application.
  • Applicants must devote at least 75% of time to research.
  • Applications must be approved by your analyst in the Office of Sponsored Research.
    • Please allow sufficient time to secure this approval before submission.

Research Exclusions:

  • Proposals in health services research or involving largescale clinical trials are ineligible.

Post-Award Obligations:

  • Annual and final progress and financial reports are required.
    • Continued funding will depend on both the timely submission of these reports and their favorable review by BWF and its program advisory committee.
