Description:

The Eppley Foundation invites proposals for advanced, novel scientific research. Particular areas of interest include innovative medical investigations, climate change, whole ecosystem studies, as well as research on single species if they are of particular significance in their environments. The Foundation does not fund work that can qualify for funding from conventional sources such as the National Science Foundation or the National Institutes of Health, or similar agencies at the state level. It is important to the Foundation that the work proposed be novel in its insights and unlikely to be underway elsewhere. The Foundation is prepared to take risks.

• Award amounts vary: typically between $15k-$25k for one year.

Indirect Costs: 15% of Modified Direct Costs

• Modified direct costs exclude travel and fringe benefits.
  • Caltech’s minimum overhead rate is based on the award’s annual gross funding. Please refer to the FY23 Annual Rate Memo for applicable minimum overhead requirements. Applicants must work within their division to account for the required overhead via an approved MORA form.

Eligibility: Research Faculty, Tenure-Track Faculty, Tenured Faculty

• Applicants must hold a PhD or MD and have an established record of publication in their specialties.
  • Candidates with newly awarded doctorates occasionally, but rarely, are funded.
  • Caltech researchers other than tenure-track faculty will need to obtain approval from the Division Chair and Vice Provost for Research prior to submitting an application.
  • Applicants must be associated with a US institution which will administer the funds.
    • The Foundation rarely considers proposals from foreign nationals studying in the US who are unable to qualify for federal funds.

Research Areas of Interest:

• The Foundation funds projects in the biological and physical sciences.
  • Particular areas of interest include innovative medical investigations, endangered species and ecosystems in the US and abroad, and climate change.

Research Exclusions:

• The Foundation does not support work in the social sciences, education, or computer science and only rarely funds research into diseases that have considerable financial support available, such as AIDS, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.

Post-Award Obligations:

• An interim report, which may be a letter, is required after half a year. A full report is required from grant recipients after one year.
