Description:

Amazon Research Awards (ARA) provides unrestricted funds and AWS Promotional Credits to academic researchers investigating various research topics in multiple disciplines. ARA funds in a variety of research areas relevant to Amazon, such as applied machine learning, automated reasoning, computer vision, fairness in artificial intelligence, machine learning algorithms and theory, natural language processing, robotics, security, sustainability and more.

Frequency: Typically annual

Total Award: $20,000 to $80,000

Selected Principal Investigators (PIs) may receive the following:

  • Unrestricted funds, no more than $80,000 USD on average

  • AWS Promotional Credits , no more than $20,000 USD on average

  • Training resources, including AWS tutorials and hands-on sessions with Amazon scientists and engineers

Awards are structured as one-year unrestricted gifts. The budget should include a list of expected costs specified in USD and should not include administrative overhead costs. The final award amount will be determined by the awards panel.

Indirect Costs: Not Allowed

  • Caltech’s minimum overhead rate is based on the award’s annual gross funding. Please refer to the   FY23 Annual Rate Memo   for applicable minimum overhead requirements.   Applicants must work within their division to account for the required overhead via an approved MORA form

Eligibility: Research Faculty, Tenure-Track Faculty, Tenured Faculty

To be eligible for an ARA Program award (“Award”), the Principal Investigator must be (1) either a full-time faculty member at an accredited academic institution or a permanent researcher at a non-governmental organization with recognized legal status in their respective country (equivalent to 501(c)(3) status under the United States Internal Revenue Code) and (2) at or above the age of majority in their jurisdiction of residence at the time of application. Each Principal Investigator is permitted to submit only one proposal to the ARA Program per call for proposal period.

Research Areas of Interest:

  • AWS AI is soliciting funding proposals related to generative AI. They specifically aim to solicit funding proposals that focus on innovation related to supporting annotators with machine learning and artificial intelligence. Proposals should be attached to one or more of the following themes:

  • AI for Information Security: Helping customers achieve the highest levels of security in the cloud.
  • Automated Reasoning: Systems assurance by mathematical proof
  • AWS AI: Advancing the frontiers of machine learning.
  • AWS Cryptography and Privacy: Setting the standard for cryptography and privacy at Amazon.
  • AWS Database Services: Innovative approaches to designing, building, or operating large-scale database services or distributed cloud services.
  • Sustainability: Making Amazon the most environmentally and socially responsible place to buy or sell goods and services.
