Description:

The Dan David Prize recognizes the work of historians, art historians, archeologists, digital humanists, curators, documentary filmmakers and all those who deepen our knowledge and understanding of the past. The prize awards up to nine prizes each year to outstanding early-and-mid-career scholars and practitioners in the historical disciplines. The prize is given in recognition of the winner's achievements as well as their potential for future excellence.

Note: Prior to 2021, the prize awarded three annual prizes of $1 million each in fields chosen under the rubric of the three time dimensions – past, present and future. The prize was redesigned in 2021.

  • $300,000 is awarded to the recipient.
  • The prizes will be awarded at an in-person ceremony in May 2024 in Tel Aviv. Prize winners will normally be required to participate in the ceremony and related programming.

Eligibility: Research Faculty, Tenure-Track Faculty, Tenured Faculty

  • Self-nominations are not accepted.
  • Academic nominees must hold a PhD and must have published at least one major piece of work, such as a book or a collection of articles related to a major project.
  • Non-academic nominees are NOT required to hold a PhD, but must have completed at least one major piece of work such as a book, major publication, exhibition, documentary film or public humanities project. They should also demonstrate an ongoing engagement with topics related to history and the study of the past.
  • Nominees must be engaged in outstanding and original work related to the study of the human past, employing any chronological, geographical and methodological focus.
  • Nominees should be in the early or mid-stage of their career.
    • Nominees should be no more than 15 years post-PhD (for academics) or 15 years after the release of their first major project (for non-academics), although due allowance will be made for career breaks (e.g. parental and care leave or duties, health-related leave and career changes).

  • Renominations from previous years are encouraged.

Research Areas of Interest:

  • Nominees can come from any field related to the study of the human past, both within academia and outside it.
  • The prize is awarded for work in the field of history, broadly defined as the study of the past in relation to humankind. Relevant disciplines include, but are not limited to:
    • History;
    • Archeology;
    • Art History;
    • Paleontology;
    • Science-based approaches to the study of the human past.

Research Exclusions:

  • The prize is not given for work on the past of the earth or the universe (e.g., geology or astronomy).
