Description:

The Sloan Research Fellowships seek to stimulate fundamental research by early-career scientists and scholars of outstanding promise.  These two-year fellowships are awarded yearly in recognition of distinguished performance and a unique potential to make substantial contributions to their field. Candidates must be nominated by a division head or other senior researcher.

Frequency: Typically annual

Total Award: $75,000

  • Funds may be used for such purposes as equipment, technical assistance, professional travel, trainee support, summer salary, or other activities directly related to the Fellow’s research
  • Does not support indirect costs and may not be used to augment an existing full-time salary

Indirect Costs: Not Allowed

  • Caltech’s minimum overhead rate is based on the award’s annual gross funding. Please refer to the FY20 Annual Rate Memo for applicable minimum overhead requirements. Applicants must work within their division to account for the required overhead via an approved MORA form

Eligibility: Tenure-Track Faculty

  • No more than three nominations from any division may be submitted
  • Candidates must hold a tenure track (or equivalent) position at a college, university, or other degree-granting institution in the United States or Canada
    • Tenure track faculty positions at the candidate’s institution must include a yearly teaching requirement
  • Candidates must hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in chemistry, computational or evolutionary molecular biology, computer science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience, ocean sciences, physics, or a related field
  • Candidates must be tenure-track, though untenured, as of September 15, 2020
  • Candidates nominated for a second time must submit a new letter of nomination, new letters of support, and updated versions of all required application documents

Research Areas of Interest:

  • Chemistry, computational or evolutionary molecular biology, computer science, economics, mathematics, neuroscience, ocean sciences, physics, or a related field

Post-Award Obligations:

  • Annual and final scientific progress and financial reports
