The Fund for Astrophysical Research in The New York Community Trust invites applications for their Theodore Dunham, Jr. Small Grants in support of research in astronomy.
Total Award: $3,000
-
Typically up to $3,000, but may be up to $5,000 in particularly meritorious cases
- Funds may be used for the acquisition of astronomical equipment, computer time, computer hardware or software that will be used in research
- Funds may not be used for equipment intended only for teaching, publication costs or travel costs to attend meetings, or salaries
Indirect Costs: Not Allowed
- Caltech’s minimum overhead rate is based on the award’s annual gross funding. Please refer to the FY20 Annual Rate Memo for applicable minimum overhead requirements. Applicants must work within their division to account for the required overhead via an approved MORA form.
Duration: 1 year

Grants are only made to non-profit colleges, universities, and observatories in the United States.
- Principal investigators must be astronomers engaged in research at one of these organizations and must reside in the United States. No grants are made to individuals
- Caltech researchers other than tenure-track faculty will need to obtain approval from the Division Chair and Vice Provost for Research prior to submitting an application
- Preference is generally given to proposals for facilities that are likely to be used by a number of astronomers
- Final narrative and financial report
