Description:
The Simons Foundation's Targeted Grants in Mathematics and Physical Sciences program is intended to support high-risk projects of exceptional promise and scientific importance on a case-by-case basis. The Simons Foundation division of Mathematics and Physical Science seeks to extend the frontiers of basic research. The division's primary focus is on theoretical mathematics, theoretical physics, and theoretical computer science.

Funding and duration will vary based on the proposed project; typical grants provide funding for up to five (5) years
- Funds may be used for experiments, equipment, computations, as well as personnel and travel; see RFA and Policy document for more information (links below)
- Applicants will be notified within two months of the LOI submission if they are invited to submit a full proposal
Indirect Costs: 20% of Modified Direct Costs

Indirect costs are limited to 20% of direct costs excluding equipment, tuition, and any subcontracts with budgets including indirect expenses
- Indirect costs paid to a subcontractor may not exceed 20% of the direct costs paid to the subcontractor
- Caltech’s minimum overhead rate is based on the award’s annual gross funding. Please refer to the FY21 Annual Rate Memo for applicable minimum overhead requirements. Applicants must work within their division to account for the required overhead via an approved MORA form

Eligibility: Tenure-Track Faculty, Tenured Faculty
- Applications may be submitted by established U.S. and foreign public and private educational institution and stand-alone research centers
- PIs and co-Investigators must have a PhD and a tenure-track or tenured position at their institute
- There is no limit on the number of applications that may be submitted per institution or individual
- There are no citizenship or department requirements for PIs
