Funding Agency: Simons Foundation

External Deadline(s):

01/28/2021 08:59 PM PST (Full Proposal)

Cognizant Office: Office of Sponsored Research/Office of Foundation Relations

Description:

The Simons Foundation's Mathematics and Physical Sciences division invites applications for Collaboration Grants for Mathematicians to stimulate collaboration in the field primarily through the funding of travel and related expenditures. The goal of the program is to substantially increase collaborative contacts between accomplished, active mathematicians in the United States, who do not otherwise have access to funding that allows support for travel and visitors.

Frequency: Typically annual

Total Award: $42,000

  • $8,400 per year for five (5) years ($42,000 total)
    • $6,000 per year for collaboration, travel, and research expenses for the awardee
    • $1,000 per year in discretionary funds for the awardee’s department
    • $1,400 per year in indirect costs to the awardee’s institution
  • Please review list of allowable expenses in the RFA

Indirect Costs: 20% of Direct Costs

  • Caltech’s minimum overhead rate is based on the award’s annual gross funding. Please refer to the FY21 Annual Rate Memo for applicable minimum overhead requirements. Applicants must work within their division to account for the required overhead via an approved MORA form

Duration: 5 years

  • Grant will start September 1, 2021

Discipline(s): Engineering and Applied Science; Physics, Mathematics, and Astronomy

Eligibility: Tenure-Track Faculty, Tenured Faculty

  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. and a tenure-track or tenured position, or be a professor emeritus, within a mathematics department with a Ph.D. degree granting program
    • Those with an appointment solely in a statistics department are not eligible
  • Applicants must have a current record of active research and publication in high-quality journals
  • Applicants must not hold any other external PI or PI equivalent grants with an end date after September 1, 2021
    • This includes other applicable Simons Foundation funding
    • Conference grants — where support only covers travel expenses for the conference participants and does not provide any support for the applicant’s own research — or grants specifically to support students/student activities are allowed
  • There are no citizenship requirements

Reporting Requirements:

  • Annual progress and financial reports are due no later than 60 days after the completion of each grant year

Recent Caltech Recipients:

  • Matthias Flach (2011, 2017)
