External Deadline(s):

10/15/2021 02:00 PM PDT (Full Proposal)

Cognizant Office: Office of Foundation Relations

Description:

The mission of The G. Harold and Leila Y. Mathers Foundation is to advance knowledge in the life sciences by sponsoring scientific research that will benefit mankind. The Foundation reviews applications on a trimester basis. Caltech is eligible to submit up to three applications per cycle.

Frequency: Typically offered multiple times per year

Total Award: $600,000 to $800,000

  • The Foundation’s grant award is not intended to be utilized for purchasing fixed capital equipment (“bricks-and-mortar”) for the lab and is intended only to support the actual investigation.

Indirect Costs: 10% of Direct Costs

  • Caltech’s minimum overhead rate is based on the award’s annual gross funding. Please refer to the FY21 Annual Rate Memo for applicable minimum overhead requirements. Applicants must work within their division to account for the required overhead via an approved MORA form.

Duration: 3 years

Discipline(s): Biology and Biological Engineering; Chemistry and Chemical Engineering; Geological and Planetary Sciences; Humanities and Social Sciences; Physics, Mathematics, and Astronomy

Eligibility: Research Faculty, Tenure-Track Faculty, Tenured Faculty

  • Support is provided for specific projects from established researchers at top universities and independent research institutions in the U.S.
    • Caltech researchers other than tenure-track faculty will need to obtain approval from the Division Chair and Vice Provost for Research prior to submitting an application.
  • As technology continues to advance, it is apparent that investigations in the area of basic science and translational research may become more and more reliant on collaborative, interdisciplinary projects. It is important to note that any interdisciplinary project proposals may require additional information regarding collaborator(s)’ achievements, and relevant expertise.
  • Renewal applications for the same or related research will not be accorded priority consideration. It is strongly advised that any re-application for grant renewal consider a new direction based on prior research, or emphasize some new potential translational aspects, and not merely an extension of previously funded research.
  • Requests for funding previously federally supported research, and/or applications pending federal approval will not be accorded priority consideration.

Research Areas of Interest:

  • The Foundation primarily supports basic science, ideally with potential translational applications.
  • Immunology, microbiome, genomics, structural biology, cellular physiology, neuroscience, etc. are some noteworthy examples of current research support.

Research Exclusions:

  • Plant Biology research and Oceanography related research will not be considered for support.
  • Requests for support of clinical trials or drug discovery will not be approved.

Post-Award Obligations:

  • Progress reports must be submitted to the Foundation every 12 months. Any scheduled payment for a grant award will be withheld until the outstanding progress report has been received.

Recent Caltech Recipients:

  • Bil Clemons (2021)
  • Thanos Siapas (2016)
  • Thanos Siapas and Michael Roukes (2013)
  • Christof Koch (2010, 2007)
